On Saturday night&nbsp;<strong>Alison Moyet<\/strong>&nbsp;turned in a performance that many are already enthusiastically citing as the concert of 2017 and in the process, proved herself unequivocally to be one of the enduring voices of our generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a career spanning more than four decades and album sales of over 23 million, it\u2019s almost impossible not to have fallen victim to a few of her ear worms. Her steadfast fan base overseas ensure she still sells out the Royal Albert Hall whenever she plays there&#8230; and they\u2019ll also tell you a couple of things have always remained a constant \u2013 a strong will to do things on her terms, and of course that distinctive bluesy contralto voice. It\u2019s a rare gift&#8230; Less than 1% possess it and Alison\u2019s god-given gift lands her smack bang in the esteemed company of other legends like&nbsp;<strong>Shirley Bassey, Karen Carpenter, Sade, Chaka Khan, Annie Lennox<\/strong>, and, of course, relative newcomer&nbsp;<strong>Adele<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those of us who know Alison and have followed her career know the kind of performance she is capable of and it\u2019s with an air of expectation that we wait in the darkness&#8230; The opening salvo for tonights concert is an effective mood setter\u2026 a 4 minute spoken monologue entitled \u2018April 10\u2019 from her latest album \u2018Other\u2019\u2026is so powerful and bass heavy it has to be permeating every chest cavity in the arena\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The track fades and the audiences applause rises to meet Alison as she appears on the riser flanked by her two very kraftwerkian multi-instrumentalists.<br>She opens proceedings aptly with the very heavy percussive and industrial \u2018I Germinate\u2019 from \u2018Other\u2019.<br>\u201cI\u2019m HERE!\u2026 I germinate\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"667\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/greatgigs.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20171011-1353-0-alison-moyet-goes-disco-at-margaret-court-arena.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greatgigs.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20171011-1353-0-alison-moyet-goes-disco-at-margaret-court-arena.png 667w, https:\/\/greatgigs.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20171011-1353-0-alison-moyet-goes-disco-at-margaret-court-arena-200x300.png 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo credit: Carbie Warbie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018She\u2019 is INDEED here, and sounding fabulous to boot. The fullness of her voice and those rich strong sustained notes make us all giddy happy&#8230; and agreeable nods spread throughout the audience.<br><br><em>\u201cTHANK YOU!!! Thank you so much for coming\u2026 it\u2019s entirely brilliant to be here with you!\u201d<\/em><br><br>Her two sidekicks show off their chops aplenty over the course of the evening, and they prove themselves a fabulous fit, providing deft accompaniment that rises and falls on cue to best showcase that soaring voice. Equally at home with the synthpop of Yazoo or her classic torch songs, I\u2019m impressed that they\u2019re able to get such a full sound with only three of them on stage. Programming technology, when judiciously used, is a wonderful thing.<br><br>\u2018Wishing You Were Here\u2019 from 1991\u2019s enormously successful \u2018Hoodoo\u2019 is up next and it is an absolute masterclass in vocal control.<br><br><em>\u201cWhen I close my eyes&#8230; wishing you were here\u2026 I can\u2019t begin to tell you how it feels\u2026\u201d<\/em><br><br>Alison is endearingly down to earth and self deprecating \u2013 her in-between banter shows she still calls it exactly like it is&#8230;<br><br><em>\u201cAh&#8230;Thank-you!\u2026So, anyway he\u2019s given me a setlist down here \u2018cos the other one was too far away &#8230;but I\u2019ve got old lady eyesight and I can\u2019t see it&#8230; so all it\u2019s doing is spoiling the stage\u2026\u201d<\/em> <br>(She then feigns scrunching it underfoot to chuckles from the audience)<br><br>After a couple of newer numbers in a row she mindfully chooses it\u2019s high time to roll back the years&#8230; <br><br><em>\u201cThis is something, in fact, I wrote 40 years ago when I was 16\u2026\u201d<\/em><br> <br>The familiar synth stabs of \u2018Nobody\u2019s Diary\u2019 elicit instant recognition from the audience and a few keen ones immediately jump up and dance in their seats.<br><br>The significance of enjoying a largely gay fanbase and then playing Margaret Court Arena is an irony not lost on Moyet and she doesn\u2019t miss an opportunity to twist the knife:<br><br><em>\u201cSo I\u2019m sure there are people out there who are parents\u2026 parents to kids who are having to grow up to the realisation that actually the world can be pretty shit sometimes\u2026 people can be pretty cold\u2026 and there\u2019s people like Margaret Court (audience boo) \u2026 and this is a song that I, as a parent, have had to write thinking of my child when I have to explain how cold the world can be\u2026 and when it\u2019s really cold \u2013 it\u2019s like ice and you CAN skate above it\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thedwarf.com.au\/img\/20171011-1353-1-alison-moyet-goes-disco-at-margaret-court-arena.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"667\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/greatgigs.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20171011-1353-1-alison-moyet-goes-disco-at-margaret-court-arena.jpg\" alt=\"Alison Moyet Goes Disco at Margaret Court Arena\" class=\"wp-image-1901\" title=\"Love All - Alison Moyet Delivers Margaret Court A Divine Intervention\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greatgigs.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20171011-1353-1-alison-moyet-goes-disco-at-margaret-court-arena.jpg 667w, https:\/\/greatgigs.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20171011-1353-1-alison-moyet-goes-disco-at-margaret-court-arena-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo credit: Carbie Warbie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Moyet proves herself to be a thinker and a brilliant lyricist&#8230; and it is reflected in her compositions&#8230; We get a reggae tinged \u2018Ski\u2019 from 2002\u2019s \u2018Hometown\u2019 album which fairly bounces along, in stark contrast to the lyrics\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cNo easy about it<\/em><br><em>Born to a mountain slide<br>You\u2019re gonna learn to take a dive\u2026\u201d<\/em><br><br>Another&nbsp;<strong>Yazoo<\/strong>&nbsp;classic&#8230; this time it\u2019s \u2018Only You\u2019 which the crowd sing along to with great gusto.Playfully chastising someone down the front for chatting through her introduction, it\u2019s apparent Moyet hasn\u2019t changed one iota&#8230; she still just speaks her mind\u2026 but then later publicly apologises to them when she hears her own voice feeding back through her stage monitors and realises she has maligned them falsely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She then takes a few minutes to introduce and contextualize quite a personal song called \u2018The English U\u2019\u2026 Moyet explains: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s a song written about my Mother who died recently of Alzheimers, robbing her of her identity and her sense of self\u2026 despite this there were two things that she still felt she could control. One was her children (laughs) and the other was the English language\u2026 and as she descended further into this loss, the only thing that she could truly remember was the way the accents went on french words\u2026 And after a long time you lose the sense of the person that was there, but the only thing I can really remember about my mother is the fact that she really hated seeing the English U missing in words like \u2018Colour\u2019\u2026and this will always be an issue for me as I have Dyslexia&#8230; I\u2019m shit \u2026 I\u2019m really bad and I can\u2019t spell&#8230; and part of me always thought that she saw that as a violence against her\u2026 but I tried&#8230; very, very desperately\u2026 so now the ONE thing that I CAN do is remember her English U and that\u2019s what this song is about\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What follows is a beautifully lush string arrangement with masterful lyricism:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI want to save the U<\/em><br><em>Safeguard the English U, for you<\/em><br><em>For you<\/em><br><em>Because I need<\/em><br><em>I need to find the you<\/em><br><em>You wanted me to see&#8230;<br><\/em><br><em>I\u2019m pretty sound with tenses<\/em><br><em>With when and which and whences<\/em><br><em>But the order of the letters are degrees<br><\/em><br><em>I am made quite otherwise it seems<\/em><br><em>A criminal to grammar<\/em><br><em>To apostrophe &#8211; the hammer<br><\/em><br><em>All that you made matter as to dream<\/em><br><em>Read to me, I\u2019m always listening\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alison Moyet: The English U at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall 01\/11\/17\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2LVe0hl4dhs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\">Just as Alison is about to finish \u2018Getting into Something\u2019 something quite telling happens\u2026<\/object><br><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\"><br>A very pissed guy comes prancing down the aisle with flailing arms and positions himself straight in front of Alison\u2026 at first the audience is bemused by his playfulness\u2026<\/object><br><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\"><br>But then there is this exchange&#8230;<\/object><br><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\"><br><strong>Inebriate:<\/strong> <em>\u201cI wanna Dance! I wanna Dance!\u201d<\/em><\/object><br><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\"><strong>Alison:<\/strong> <em>\u201cWell dance then\u2026 dance! &#8230;Dance up the back!\u2026Dance then\u2026!\u201d<\/em><br><strong>Inebriate:<\/strong> (to the crowd now:) &#8220;<em>Get up off your seats\u2026 This is fucking boring! Get up off your seats!\u201d<\/em><\/object><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\">It\u2019s not clear who or what is boring but his impudent criticism of what so far has been such a brilliant gig completely wrongsides the audience who suddenly, as one, turn from bemusement to downright annoyance&#8230; <\/object><br><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\">The arena groan as one.<\/object><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\"><strong>Alison:<\/strong> <em>\u201cMate\u2026 mate\u2026MATE, can I tell you something?\u2026 This set\u2019s got shape\u2026right? It goes from one place\u2026 it goes to another\u2026 eventually you get to dance\u2026 all you gotta do is start from a little bit less beer\u2026 have a little respect for the other people sitting around\u2026 Mate&#8230; if you wanna dance, go dance up the back\u2026. go dance at a disco\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/object><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\">Inebriate is obviously beyond saving himself. He continues to shout his mouth off at Alison&#8230;<\/object><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\"><strong>Alison:<\/strong> <em>\u201cDo you know what? DON\u2019T come and see an act that you\u2019ve got no idea of what they do&#8230; \u2019cos it\u2019s just gonna make you look like a TWAT!\u201d<\/em><\/object><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\"><em>Ouch.<\/em> You can just sense everyone ducking for cover and shrinking back into their seats\u2026.It seems he\u2019s just been schooled. Today\u2019s lesson? Don\u2019t cross Ms Moyet!<\/object><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\">Without missing a beat, she immediately launches into a new number from \u2018The Minutes\u2019 called \u201cChangeling\u201d which then majestically segues into \u201cAll Cried Out\u201d. She sounds magnificent in the sparse arrangement\u2026<br>As a mic stand is being changed, Alison, now eyeballing the inebriate, engages him once more&#8230;<\/object><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><object width=\"457\" height=\"340\">A<strong>lison:<\/strong> <em>\u201cSo&#8230;You might want to get a drink at this point\u2026(chuckles) \u2018cos this one\u2019s gonna be slow\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Chuckles) (Crowd applause)<br><em>\u201cWhen I\u2019m doing a song that\u2019s really heartfelt I tend to focus on one person in the audience, so do you know what\u2026? COVER ME!!!!\u201d<\/em><br><br>After a couple more gorgeous slower numbers, the set now takes an inevitable turn into dance territory&#8230; \u2018Right As Rain\u2019 thumps away and is a born contender for a European fashion catwalk. The dissatisfied miscreant comes to mind again as Alison sings the biting lyrics:<br><br><em>\u201cIf YOU can\u2019t be happy with me<br>Be UNHAPPY with me<br>STAY unhappy with me&#8230;\u201d<br><\/em><br>\u2018Lover, Go\u2019, another new track from the brilliant \u2018Other\u2019 album is up next and sits as one of my personal highlights from tonights performance. The weaving synth lines that spiral up throughout the track are a gorgeous counterpoint to her vocals&#8230; a bitter resignation of a failed relationship has never felt so exhilarating&#8230; an absolute belter!<br><br>She addresses Margaret Court again in the introduction to the new song entitled \u2018The Rarest Birds\u2019:<br><br><em>This song is really relevant to this place and to you people here&#8230; I changed my life completely&#8230; I used to live in a big house in the country where you didn\u2019t know your neighbours&#8230; you didn\u2019t know anyone.. I moved to this place called Brighton in England&#8230; it\u2019s a small city but full of diversity&#8230; this is a place where young, and indeed old gay couples, can express themselves completely freely, everywhere, without any fear of harm or violence or fear of anyone disrespecting them. This is where trans people can live, completely \u2018out\u2019&#8230; this is where old people can be eccentric, where young people can be as bland as they wanna be&#8230;. to me this is a great example of how everyone can just \u2018be\u2019&#8230; let everybody be. We\u2019re all children of the same womb, we\u2019re all siblings, we\u2019re all parents, we\u2019re all children&#8230; and we belong together&#8230; And Margaret Court \u2013 if she believes in God as the Great Architect, then why is she saying that he\u2019s failed? So that\u2019s my take on it&#8230;. So this is a coming out song&#8230;where someone like me&#8230; an old matriach&#8230; is going to hold your hand and say we belong together, we live together and I celebrate you&#8230;.\u201d<\/em><br><br>Probably the loudest applause of the evening ensues as she launches into one of the most affecting songs I\u2019ve heard in ages&#8230; \u2018The Rarest Birds\u2019 leaves everyone in no doubt that we are privy to something bordering on genius. It\u2019s a pearler of a tune&#8230;<br><br>We all disco like it\u2019s 1982 as she finishes off the main set with a couple of singalongs&#8230; \u2018Is This Love\u2019 and another Yazoo classic, \u2018Situation\u2019&#8230;<br><br>The band leg it backstage to whet their collective whistles before the final three numbers. She explains that despite the crowd enthusiastically yelling requests, we WILL get the three songs she\u2019s planned&#8230; three bangers&#8230;<br><br>\u2018Whispering Your Name\u2019 is first up&#8230; and it\u2019s party time on the dance floor&#8230; As the opening chords of \u2018Love Resurrection\u2019 ring out there are shrieks of excitement and the place just erupts&#8230; the vibe is just so joyous&#8230;<br><br>\u201c<em>Thank YOU!!!!!!!!
